Montevideo

I went to Uruguay and Argentina in January (I found a round trip flight from Mexico City in only 129 USD!). I met my friend Pablo in CouchSurfing, who was my host in Montevideo (excellent host, by the way). I made him send me a postcard =]

Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 (about one-third of the country population) in an area of 194.0 square kilometres (74.9 sq mi). The southernmost cosmopolitan city in the Americas, is situated in the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata, or River Plate.

The city was established in 1724 by a Spanish soldier, as a strategic move amidst the Spanish-Portuguese dispute over the platine region; and it was also under brief British rule in 1807. In the 20th century, Montevideo hosted all of the matches during the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, and was the theater of the first major naval battle in the Second World War. Montevideo is the seat of the administrative headquarters of Mercosur, South America’s leading trading bloc, as well as ALADI.

I will definitely go back to Uruguay. Totally recommended!

Montevideo es la capital y ciudad más grande de Uruguay. De acuerdo al censo de 2011, la ciudad tiene una población de 1,319,108 habitantes, aproximadamente un tercio de la población del país, en un área de 194 kilómetros cuadrados. Es la ciudad cosmopolita más austral de las Américas, situada en la costa sur del país, en el banco nororiental del Río de la Plata.

La ciudad se estableció en 1724 por un soldado español, como una jugada estratégica en medio de la disputa entre Portugal y España por la región platera, y fue también gobernada por poco tiempo por Gran Bretaña en 1807. En el siglo XX Montevideo fue sede de los partidos durante la primera copa mundial de la FIFA, en 1930, y fue también testigo de la primera batalla naval importante en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Montevideo es sede de las oficinas administrativas del Mercosur, así como de la ALADI (Asociación Latinoamericana de Integración).

Definitivamente en Uruguay hay mucho por ver, y yo tengo que volver. ¡Un destino 100% recomendado!
